Tom Lane, Teacher of the Year

2009-2010

Mr. Lane was interviewed for the Warrior Wampum on February 26, for his outstanding effort to teach and was chosen by his colleagues. Here are some questions about his past, present, and background.

1. What is your background as in hobbies or likings to do during free time?
Lane: I love to play scramble on my Iphone. I also like to go cycling and play on my computer. Fridays are my date nights with my wife and I enjoy reading science fiction books.

2. How long have you been teaching throughout your career?
Lane: I have been teaching for 17 years in all. 15 years of teaching adults about careers and 2 years teaching science at this school. For now, this is how long I have been teaching.

3. How do you feel about getting this award?
Lane: I am honored to have this privilege, mostly, I am shocked. I think that I don’t deserve this, but I was elected by my peers to think that I am good at my work.

4. When did you want to teach?
Lane: In high school, while I was a student but as a teacher, I wanted to teach genetics.

5. Do you know why you got this award?
Lane: I don’t know why, but I think it’s because I’m very passionate and energetic to teach students everyday rain or shine.

6. Why chose science, why not teach any other subjects?
Lane: It was the first subject I was offered and teaching is gold to me, so as long as I teach, I’m okay with it.

7. What is your strongest point in science?
Lane: I’m really excited about how things work and move like a wire connected to a light bulb to a battery.

8. What about other subjects? Are you good at them?
Lane: I think that a teacher teaches very well if he’s a good teacher and he can teach any subject, no matter what.

9. Do you like your students working on textbooks, worksheets, or labs?
Lane: I think students should do a lab because it is fun and more understandable, but a textbook may have all the info they need so that would be my 2nd choice.

10. Where do you think you get your knowledge?
Lane: I think I get most of my knowledge from my parents though I learn from my students also.

11. What do you think of yourself?
Lane: I want to be fun, crazy (in a funny way), and energetic teacher. I can’t be this way if there is a behavior corruption though.

12. Would you rather wear a suit or a shirt & shorts?
Lane: I feel more comfortable in a suit but don’t want anybody seeing my legs in shorts.

13. What type of food do you like to eat?
Lane: I like spicy, seafood, and love steaks

14. Have you been in any disasters?
Lane: When I was in Florida, I have been in two hurricanes and in the Vietnam War.

15. Can you tell your viewers about this war?
Lane: I love the people and the scenery is beautiful but the war was horrible. I lost a buddy who was training with me named Bruce Crosby.

16. Would you rather learn every day or teach every day?
Lane: I love teaching but I do like going to classes.
